Frequently asked questions
What finishes do I use to keep floors looking raw and unfinished?
The raw and rustic look is a very popular! Several products have been introduced in recent years to accomplish this. One popular stain choice is a mix of Duraseal’s Country White and Neutral with a Matte finish. Another option is the Bona Domo sealer with a Matte finish. Bona’s Traffic Naturale is a common finish used as a top coat, but any matte finish will help to create the “raw” look. Bona’s Craft Oils and Rubio’s Monocoat can also be use to create the raw look. These are available in many color options, too.
I’d like to spec wide with wood planks. How do I prevent this material from cupping?
We have your solution! Many builders and contractors will shy away from wider widths due to this issue. Engineered flooring is a great option for wider width wood planks. They are designed to respond less to changes in moisture. We offer engineered flooring pre-finished (ready to install) and unfinished, which is sanded and finished to the client’s specifications. Additionally, we recommend using Bona’s R540 adhesive and moisture barrier (all-in-one) to help ensure the success of the installation.
Do you recommend installing wood flooring in a basement?
Yes! Engineered flooring is not as susceptible to movement caused by variation in moisture contents and is what we recommend for basements. A subfloor sealer such as Bona R540 is recommended to help guard against moisture issues. This is our most recommended adhesive and moisture barrier. Installing solid wood flooring below grade is outside of NWFA guidelines.
